ROBERTO GARCÍA MAKES HIS MARK IN SUPERSPORT WITH AN UNFORGETTABLE PODIUM

GMT94 shines in a tough weekend for Puig-backed teams, with bimota by Kawasaki Racing Team collecting key points

The Balaton Park Circuit hosted the Hungarian round of the championship, which took place under ideal conditions, with warm and dry weather accompanying all track activity from practice sessions to the races on Sunday, May 3.

The standout of the weekend was the young rider from GMT94, Roberto García (#31), who secured a brilliant third place in Race 2, thus achieving his first podium in the Supersport World Championship. At just 19 years old and the 2024 Moto2 European Championship champion, García managed to bounce back after suffering a crash on Saturday to deliver an outstanding performance on Sunday.

In the overall standings, García sits in eighth position with 57 points, while his teammate Lucas Mahias (#94) holds sixth place with 65 points.

On the other hand, bimota by Kawasaki Racing Team did not have a particularly glorious weekend, but it was still valuable in terms of points. In the Superpole Race, Alex Lowes (#22) finished at the tail end of the top 10, while in Race 1 he secured a well-earned sixth place. His teammate Axel Bassani (#47) tried to keep pushing, but brake issues prevented him from maintaining the strong consistency he had shown in recent weeks.

After four rounds and 12 races, Lowes is fifth overall in the championship standings with 82 points, while Bassani is now ninth with 67. In the manufacturers’ standings, Bimota remains second, and the BbKRT team is currently third in the teams’ standings.

Lowes assessed the weekend positively despite the outcome:
“[…] I was thinking to pass him in T10 but it completely caught me off guard. I hit the back of him with my hand and lost the front. That is hard to accept because I think we had a really positive weekend, I was maximising the pace we had, made good starts and I was getting myself in good positions. I think with the progress we made from Friday to Saturday to Sunday, it’s a shame to end this weekend with this race. Overall, I think how we did as a team was really good.”

The next round of the WorldSBK Championship 2026 will be the fifth of the season and will take place from May 15 to 17 at Most, in Czechia, where teams will look to consolidate their performance and continue adding key points in the season.
